Grewelthorpe Village Hall WI2.png

Grewelthorpe Women's Institute normally meets on the first Thursday of the month, at 7.30pm in Grewelthorpe Village Hall. Visitors are always welcome as we hope you will join our merry little group!

The WI is open to all women in Grewelthorpe and surrounding areas and we have recently celebrated our 75th birthday. Our motto is 'Inspiring Women' and there is no age limit as we are all young at heart!

What we do:

  • welcome new friends

  • hold at least 11 meetings a year

  • learn new skills

  • help to make a difference to the community

  • enjoy different speakers, activities and events

  • are entertained at meetings held by other WIs in the Skelldale group

  • relish opportunities at workshops organised by the Federation in Ripon

  • go on trips to the cinema, theatre or places suggested by our members

  • go out to dinner

  • take part in quizzes; and,

  • also try to win the community entry at Masham Show each September!

We also receive regular newsletters from the Federation, eight issues of the magazine 'WI Life' each year (delivered to your door), an annual membership booklet with lots of discounts and also access to the WI website where you can get involved in sport, campaigns, cultural and creative events.

We don't

  • Sing Jerusalem

  • Make jam - unless you really want to!

We are a friendly little group and our members decide how our WI is run and what we do. Membership fees are set nationally and are currently £44 annually, though they do reduce prorata/quarter if you join part way through the year.

We make a small charge of £3 for guests/visitors but if you are a paid up member there is no additional charge

Royal British Legion

The Grewelthorpe Branch of The Royal British Legion was established in 1929 and continues as a small but active group of around 40 members from the villages of Grewelthorpe and the surrnounding area. A detailed history can be found on the Village Website at www.grewelthorpe.org.uk.

The Branch aims to maintain the principles of the British Legion as set out in the Royal Charter and provide support to its objectives:

  • To perpetuate the memory of sacrifices made during service with the Armed Forces in war and peace;

  • To relieve need, suffering and distress of Beneficiaries and their Dependants and to further the education of Beneficiaries and their Dependants;

  • To relieve need and protect the mental and emotional health of the Dependants of Beneficiaries who have died or been severely injured;

  • To relieve suffering, hardship and distress to Dependants caused by the absence of those serving in the Armed Forces;

  • To promote and support schemes for the resettlement, rehabilitation, retraining and sheltered employment of Beneficiaries and their Dependants

The Branch membership currently comprises individuals from both military and civilian backgrounds who, in pursuit of the aims outlined above, undertake various voluntary projects in the local area. In recent years much of this effort has been in support of the Lister House Poppy care home in Ripon.  However, more recently, the branch restored the Wayside Cross that has been standing in the centre of Grewelthorpe Village for over 100 years and, as part of the 2022 celebration of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, installed a commemorative bench and ornamental tree by the Village pond. The Branch has also restored several of the existing village benches;  two of which were timed to coincide with the Coronation of King Charles III in May 2023

Membership of the Royal British Legion is open to all; military service is not a pre-requisite. The feeling of comradeship and esprit de corps derived from being part of an organisation dedicated to helping those who have made great personal sacrifices for their Country is also available to all.

If you would like more information about joining the Grewelthorpe Branch, please contact the Branch Secretary, Edward Threapleton, on threaps62@gmail.com or telephone 01765 658744
